and symphony orchestras, music for theatre and documentary film. Her music
was commissioned by the English Chamber Orchestra, the BBC London Symphony Orchestra, the Scottish National Ensemble, the London Children's Ballet, the Grimethorpe Colliery Band as well as by solo and
chamber music performers.
"The main trend in Halyna Ovcharenko’s work is determined by rural folklore and folk
music forms, which inspired many of her compositions. In her endeavour to breathe symphonic life into
folksong, she has encountered the problem of amalgamating folk sources and frequently complex
contemporary techniques."
Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, Second Edition Volume 18, page 817.
Halyna Ovcharenko’s large-scale compositions include: The Sun Scorched Mallow (Обпалена Мальва Ukrainian title) a vocal-symphonic piece for choir, orchestra, narrator and soloist; a composition dedicated to the famine and genocide in Ukraine during 1932-33. The poetic basis of the work was the poems of Valentina Otroshchenko. Critics noted that Halyna demonstrated professional skill and artistic talent in this composition, which led her to win the International Composition Competition in Kiev in 1992.
Her two ballets The Last Battle staged pursuant to text by C.S. Lewis (the Narnia series) and Kupala’s Night (Ніч на Івана Купала Ukrainian title) based on Gogol’s book St. John’s Eve were successfully
performed at the West End in London and the Ljubljana’s National Opera and Ballet Theatre in Slovenia.
The composition Everlasting (Предковічне Ukrainian title) for chamber orchestra and ensemble of
authentic voices won Halyna a prize at the International Women Composer’s Competition in Kyiv 1995.
In her work, Halyna widely uses the technique of heterophony as a way of making music texture
which she found in ancient music folklore. This complex of polyphonic sound formations combined
with modern techniques of compositional writing lies at the basis of her composition Illusion for
Eighteen solo Strings, Polyphonic Pastoral for 24 Flutes and There was a Shimmering Silence,
(Мерехтіла тиша у небі) for string orchestra. The pieces were performed by the English Chamber
Orchestra (ECO), Scottish Chamber Ensemble, French Flute Orchestra (FFO) and Kyiv Camerata
and were well received by audiences in the UK, France and Ukraine.
When she moved to the UK, Halyna discovered for herself the colourful timbre of clarinet ensembles and clarinet orchestras. Her pieces written for these groups were performed at festivals in the UK and Europe.
In the UK, Halyna enriched her orchestrating skills by writing scores for Wind Band. The first pieces
were commissioned by the South West Youth Sinfonia, and recently she wrote another piece Vyshyvanka, for Flugelhorn, Vibraphone and Grimethorn Collery Band for a special performance at the International
Competition BIC at Newcastle.
Her composition Over the River a Cuckoo Cried (Летіла Зозуленька Ukrainian title) which Halyna wrote when she was sixteen years old regained popularity and prominence in light of the war in Ukraine and the tragedy that the Ukrainian people live daily. This song about a little orphan is written for female choir and soloists and has been performed at several concerts and fundraising events associated with Ukrainian orphans who lost their hero-parents defending Ukraine. Halyna donates all royalties from the performances of this piece to the Orphans Charity Organisation.
Halyna’s collection of works, featuring original compositions by Halyna Ovcharenko as well as some popular classical music arranged duets has been published by the Oxford University Press and Spartan Press.
Halyna also takes a creative approach in her teaching career. She composes music for children and with children, tailoring it to different levels of difficulty as well as doing arrangements for piano duets for all levels of performers to be combined with professionalism and fun.
Nurturing and encouraging young talents in in their creative work, she has donated a trophy to the Bristol and Weston-Super-Mare Music Festivals to reward young composers for their achievements and contribution to contemporary music.
